Gaylord Tennis Women Shine at Traverse City Tournament

March 6, 2017 03:00 PM

Two Gaylord area women, along with their mixed doubles tennis partners, took first and second place honors for their 6.5 division at the recent Bob Swanson Memorial Tournament in Traverse City.  Sue Wadel Smith from Gaylord and partner Dave Sizemore from Cedar Springs were first place Champs, and Sindy Steffner from Johannesburg and partner Steve Rybarsyk from Williamsburg were Finalists after the challenging weekend long competition.

“The Bob” event honors the memory of Bob “Swany” Swanson, described as “a worthy tennis player, competitor, consummate sportsman and true champion of the game of tennis who lost his courageous battle with cancer at the age of 46”.

“The Bob” draws tennis competitors from around the state, who compete in doubles tennis matches and enjoy fellowship afterward with refreshments and entertainment. The event raises money for scholarships for academically qualified students who truly love to play tennis and embody both the character and qualities that made Bob uniquely special to so many.  Each year the event raises at least $6000 for scholarship winners in the 39 counties of the Northern Michigan Tennis Association district.

Smith and Steffner, both serve on the non-profit Alpine Regional Tennis Association (ARTA) board of directors in Gaylord.  The ARTA mission fosters interest and skill development for the lifelong sport of tennis for people of all ages in northern Michigan.  To that end, ARTA has been successfully raising funds to build a new USTA approved four tennis court center at the Otsego County Sportsplex.  The group also hosts youth team tennis activities, offers tennis skill building at area schools, and adult tennis activities.
