Over the last couple months Birchwood Farms of Harbor Springs has been hosting Junior Team Tennis on Wednesday nights. On these nights courts were filled with young tennis players eager to learn. The players varied in age from 7 all the way to high school level players. The common theme was for the players to gain more experience and confidence.  Birchwood’s Head Pro, Denny Green strives to make sure all players take away a positive experience off the court win or lose. The goals were not only to help players become stronger competitors but also help encourage good sportsmanship and love of the game.

Junior Team Tennis is now in Northern MI and is a great way to grow Junior Tennis in your area.  JTT players learn healthy competition and tennis skills from a coach while making friends.  Look for more information on JTT events to come!

Northern Michigan has piloted a junior program through the USTA called Junior Team Tennis. JTT is a great way for players to come out and get match play experience, learn more about the game of tennis, and have lots of fun as a team! The USTA provides a $100 incentive to all area clubs who chose to participate in the program.

Birchwood Farms in Harbor Springs is the pilot site for this program in Northern Michigan and will be using all of the incentive money to create new programming and scholarships for young players interested in the game. The first event was a big success! There were 17 players competing, some players are veterans to the game and were coming out for some pre tournament practice. Other players were experiencing their first hand at match play. It was a great site to see all 10 of the courts filled with young and enthusiastic players from Northern Michigan. It is vital to the growth of NMTA that we continue to grow tennis at every age and continue to support young players in learning the game.

If you are interested in starting up this program in your area, or joining Birchwood Farm’s JTT Program, please call JTT Coordinator, Megan Green for more details 231-881-7355.
