Cap Leighton Teaching Pro Award: Chris Michalowski - Acme, Mi.

The Cap Leighton Award recognizes the tennis teaching professional who contributes to tennis in his or her community beyond his livelihood. This person gives freely in promoting involvement in tennis for players of all levels and ages, and assists in developing tennis programs and participation in these programs.

Michalowski has devoted much of his time when not working as a tennis professional at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa to volunteering in the local community and surrounding Northern Michigan areas. He was instrumental in the establishment of a local charity tournament which awards scholarships each year to high school seniors. Michalowski is a Director for the Northern Michigan Tennis Association (NMTA). He was the NMTA Junior Davis Cup coach for several years, and currently serves as the NMTA USTA Jr. Team Tennis District Coordinator.

Due in large part to his efforts in the local community, Michalowski is the recipient of the following honors: Northern Michigan Tennis Association Volunteer of the Year, USTA/Midwest Section Jr. Team Tennis Organizer of the Year, USPTA National Star Award, USPTA Michigan Tennis Professional of the Year (two times), and USTA/USPTA National Community Service Award.
Michalowski has introduced more juniors to the sport of tennis through programs including Ralleyball and USTA Jr. Team Tennis. He started a junior tennis fund which provides scholarships to juniors who need assistance. He also encouraged his facility to provide court time for an Alternative Education tennis program.
